La Brujao

Call: 506-2228-6710 | Address: 100 meters South from Atlantis Plaza shopping center

I tend to visit this liquor store daily. No, I'm not that much of a alcoholic, they have stuff other than booze. Actually, they have these handmade sweet plantain chips (¢250) that are awesome. Basically, La Brujao is a convenience store with booze. They have great prices and the staff is friendly. Parking can be rough here, as you pretty much have to back out on to the main road when exiting. This is a great store for quick (in and out) purchases.

This a great grocery store. Much less expensive than the Auto Mercado. Expect to find everything you need. They have a great produce section, and meat counter. Mas X Menos is chain store that you can find all over Costa Rica.

Bagelmen's

1 Review |star1star2star3star4star5

Call: 2289-4616 | Address: In Plaza Florencia, 200 mts north of Del Centro Comercial Paco

Bagelmen's is a chain bagel shop here in Costa Rica (maybe world wide). I went for a bagel and coffee this morning and had a mixed impression. I ordered a "everything" bagel with cream cheese and sliced tomatoes. I'm still working on my Spanish, and they their English. One of the managers spoke English and instructed the cashier of what I was ordering. The total was c3,100 ($5.30 us), which I thought was very expensive. When I received my order, it ended up being sun dried tomato cream cheese and no sliced tomatoes. So, my order was lost in translation,

Today was my first visit to the Oasis Cafe. It's tucked away just off the main road in Escazu. There menu has a little bit of something for everyone, mainly vegetarian items with some chicken. I ordered the Veggie burger which came with a choice of soup or salad. I choose the salad, which was excellent, with pineapple, purple cabbage, cucumbers, avocado, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce and an awesome vinaigrette. The salad could have easily been enough for lunch. The Veggie burger was also amazing, served on a toasted baguette. All for only $3,000. Definitely give this place a try. I

The Bueno Tierra Cafe is a nice treat in the heart of Escazu. Fresh, mostly organic and vegetarian food. I recently went for breakfast and the fruit salad with honey and yogurt. Yum, it was delicious. Additionally, I asked for glass of water and she brought me water with mint and ginger in it, which was excellent. They also have coffee and teas. Hopefully I'll have a chance to go back here this weekend.

Hiper Mas

Call: (506) 2288 4270 | Address: Escazu, Waterfront Trejos Montealegre Shopping Center

We drive to Escazu almost every weekend, just to go to Hiper Mas. They have pretty much everything we need to stock our pantry and more. The other commenter mentioned that there are "huge crowds", but I've found that it depends on what day and time you go. We can usually, get in and out really quickly. If only the had another location a little closer to us.

Fresh Market

1 Review |star1star2star3star4star5

Address: Centro Commercial Paco shopping mall, next to Il Panino restaurant

I stopped by the Fresh market the other day to pick up a couple of things. This is a great little gourmet grocery store that doesn't have everything you need, but it does have the essentials. Fresh Market has a great bakery and deli counter and a decent selection of prepared foods. Prices are what you would expect of a gourmet grocery, kinda high.

Auto Mercado

Call: 2588-1742 | Address: In the Atlantis Plaza shopping center, upp the hill from Scotia Bank

Seem like I always end up at the Auto Mercado for my groceries. I try to hit up some of the lesser priced stores but it's always like herding cattle. They're to busy. The Auto Mercado has a great selection, with wide aisles and enough check out lanes to speed me through. The downside is that they're a bit more expensive than the other grocery stores. They also have one of the better wine selections, if you're into that sort of thing.

Spoon

1 Review |star1star2star3star4star5

Call: 2225-0938 | Address: Centro Comercial Plaza Laureles, Escazu

Spoon is a modern cafe with a nice selection on their menu. They have great coffee. The prices tend to be a little high and the service is not the best, especially, if you don't speak Spanish. Every time I've been here, I always end up with a good tasting meal, weather it be breakfast or lunch. But, I always walk away thinking I could have gotten the same, somewhere else
